Jesus Last Supper Bread and Wine – Meaning of Maundy Thursday. We Christians, the followers of Christ, has been ordered by Jesus to celebrate the Last Supper to remember his death. It’s a time we get together to eat his flesh and drink from his blood.
Jesus Last Supper Bread and Wine Bible Verse for Today
“And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19)
The Last Supper is not just about breaking bread and drinking wine alone. The deeper meaning is taking the blood and the flesh of Christ which cleanse us from all impurities. He told us to do this always to remember his death, how he has come to purify us and take away our sin. The Last Supper stands for the new covenant, the covenant which was made with his blood. Taking the blood of Jesus and his flesh is like a medicine that cleanses us from sin.
The Last Supper brings about unity in the body of Christ. We eat from the body and drink from the same body. It brings love to the house of the Lord, so it brings who are far away closer to him. Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” The Last Supper is for the followers of Christ, it is not for everybody. Those that were present at the Last Supper are those elected to be disciples.
Maundy Thursday Meaning
Maundy Thursday (or Holy Thursday) marks the start of the Christian three-day celebration of Easter. Easter is the most important time and feast in the Christian calendar. The Maundy Thursday (or Holy Thursday) comes before Good Friday. This 2019 year it has fallen on April 18. On this day we remember the Last Supper of Jesus with the Apostles. Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper or Communion. According to the Bible, during the Last Supper, Jesus also washed the feet of his followers. It was a sign that they should love each other, just as Jesus loved them.
