MOTHER’S DAY Pray for Mothers

pray for mothers

Maternity is a word that is not in the “top ten” of most popular ones. But you can’t avoid it because we are surrounded by mothers everywhere. At home are our dear mothers, at work – there are our colleagues’ mothers. And a female officer in a police uniform can also maybe is someone’s mom.

MOM is the most spoken word in the world! MOTHER is a person for whom we are always children, even if we are already over 40 or 50 years old. MOTHER is one who loves us without any merits.

According to Wikipedia, “Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in May.” It is an event that has become part of our lives, that we celebrate and honor our mothers. In Exodus 20: 12, God commands us to honor them.

“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” (Exodus 20:12)

Praying for mothers is one of the best things we can do for them.

We bring God’s blessings, goodness, and mercies upon them when we pray. Prayer is the strongest weapon that every believer has, and with this weapon, we can indeed do great things for our mothers.

Some of us were raised by single parents. In most cases, the mother had to do up to 2 to 4 jobs a day to make sure that became what we are today. When we think about the sacrifices they made, then we will understand the importance of praying and blessing them, not just on a particular day, but on all the days of our lives.

Pray for Mothers

Lord, we are looking for a hand that holds and encourages us, that calms and protects us.
We need a hand that is strong and supports us, that accompanies and guides us.
Mothers have such hands for us. We thank you for that today and every day of our lives. Amen.

The Importance of Mothers in Our Lives

Mothers play great roles in our lives. Aside from carrying us in their womb for 9 months, they had many sleepless nights because of our cries as little children in the night. The Bible said in Isaiah 66:13 “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

Mothers bring comfort and they are always there to cheer us up. A mother’s love for her children is unmatchless and unfathomable. When we were born, the first person that we connected to was our mother, they play a very vital role in our lives.

Many of the things we know and still do today are a result of what we were taught or what we learned from our mothers. Mother instructs us, molds us, protects us, offers themselves for us, rebuke us when we err, train us to know the right way, assesses our development, nurtures us, counsels us, and encourages us.

A child’s prayer:

God, you gave me my mother who cares for me on healthy and sick days. In happy and sad hours she is by my side. I thank you for this. Give her a lot of strength and love. Give her peace and joy. Help me to show her my love and gratitude not only today, on Mother’s Day, but every day you give her to me. Amen.

Mothers are nation builders. A child left to him/herself will probably end up with a horrible life. Someone said that when they say “behind every successful man is a woman”, they mean the mother.

It may not be true, but in a way, there is a truth in it. It took the wisdom of Moses’s mother for him to be saved. If she had failed, probably, Israel would have stayed a long time in the land of Egypt as a stranger. It is thenceforth important that we understand the place of mothers in our lives, and celebrate them always.

The Need to Pray for Mothers

Just as the Bible commands and encourages us to pray for the leadership of our nation, churches, and every organization, we are also encouraged to pray for mothers. Mothers play a leadership role in our lives, and if we can pray for others, we should more pray for our mothers.

When Jesus Christ was on the cross, one of the few things he said was about his mother. He knew that he was going to die and leave his mother alone and in sorrow, therefore he told the Apostle John to take care of his (Christ’s) mother like his mother. He was concerned about the welfare of his mother after he is gone, and he prayed for her to be taken care of by us. (John 19: 25-27)

Mothers pass through emotional, physical, and social pain in the quest to take care of us. They passed through so much pain before they could give birth to us. Emotionally, they were drained, and of course, their social lives were also affected. Dorcas was a mother during her days, and because of her good work, the believers didn’t want her to die. They called for Peter to come and pray for her restoration. It was because of her good work. (Acts 9:36-41)

We should pray for our mothers because they have labored and are still laboring for us. When we were children, they did the prayer for us, and as grown-ups, we owe them our prayers.

Prayer Points for Mothers

Hannah was the first wife of Elkanah, but because she had no child, the husband married a second wife, who later became a torment in her life. She had to pray to God for a child, but when Eli the high priest saw her praying, he thought that she was drunk.

Before she answered and told him “No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.” The high priest prayed for her and said: “Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.” And God answered the prayer of Eli. (1 Samuel 1:15-17)

There are many things we can pray about concerning our mothers.

  • It is necessary to pray for the health of our mothers. So they can enjoy life.
  • We can pray for their emotional healing. Some of them are emotionally depressed and weak, maybe due to some past events. We should pray for their emotional healing.
  • Also, we should pray for them to be blessed with everything good from God.
  • Pray for their salvation if they are yet to know the LORD.

There are also many other things we can pray for our mothers, individually, we should not neglect to pray for them, not just on Mother’s Day, but every day of our lives.

Short Prayer for Mothers:

God, we thank you for our mothers. We thank you for giving us someone who cares and loves us like them. We are grateful to you. Heavenly Father, we ask and pray that you bless our mothers today. We ask that you remove everything that caused them sorrow, or to be depressed. Heal them of every emotional challenge. We ask that you empower them and open doors of opportunities for them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
