You have the Words of Eternal Life daily Devotional

Jesus, You have the Words of Eternal Life! Living with Jesus, living as a Christian means more than just hanging a cross on the wall of your room, or putting a cross around your neck!

Daily Devotional for May 7

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:66-69)

You have the Words of Eternal Life

So what should you say now when Jesus asks you: “Do you also want to go?”

Are there good reasons to stay with Jesus, to live with Him? Oh yes, there is a very good reason, and I am convinced that nowhere is that reason more clearly articulated than here in Peter’s words, “Lord, where shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed and known that you are the Holy One of God”.

“Where shall we go?” Peter answers the opposite question. Are there not other places, other beliefs, other approaches to life? Oh yes, there are! There are many other places, many other ways of orienting ourselves in life, of finding our way.

Salvation is only in Jesus Christ

But there is only one God. There is only one Savior sent by God.

Therefore, for Peter and the other disciples, there are no other places for salvation! And for me, there is no other place to go either. With Jesus, I have found what I cannot find anywhere else: “The words of eternal life” is what Peter calls what I have found.

Jesus is the way to the Kingdom of God

Words that uplift you, give you meaning, reach your heart, and convince you. Words that inspire confidence, that help me to forgive myself and to appreciate myself again. Words that bring peace, have the power to move me towards goodness and to fight against selfish tendencies, indifference, and ruthlessness. Words that, even in the face of death, give me hope again, Easter words.

But above all, they are the words of God himself.

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, we thank you for giving us your Son Jesus as the Paschal Lamb, as our Saviour. Let us long for more of You. Help us to develop self-discipline so that we may feast daily on You and Your Word. We want all of us to wake up invigorated and ready to walk in Jesus’ name. Amen.
